Low-contrast pictures

Lighting. Be sure to light your subject properly. See... Zettl's Television Production Handbook.

Gain. If your lighting is adequate, your preamplifier may not provide sufficient voltage gain. Either change to another preamplifier or add gain stages.

Impedance. The input impedance of your pickup preamplifier is also very important. Photo currents tend to be flimsy. Your preamp should have a high-impedance input.
